However, with pet ownership comes a responsibility to ensure that our furry friends are not only happy and healthy but also that they contribute positively to our community environment. If you’re considering bringing a pet into your home, it’s important to ensure that they’re a good fit for both your lifestyle and living space. Plus, you’ll need to get our authorisation before making any decisions.

Dog Ownership on the Rise

We’ve noticed more residents are choosing to welcome dogs into their homes—a wonderful testament to our love for these loyal companions. However, alongside this increase, we’ve seen a rise in reports of dog-related nuisances, such as barking at late hours, fouling in communal areas, and even instances where dogs have intimidated residents.

To address this, we have a few guidelines in place for dog owners on the estate:

• Permission Required: Before you can keep a dog at Cowley Estate, you must obtain permission from Cowley RMO. We’ll consider whether your property is suitable for the dog you wish to keep.
• Microchipping: All dogs must be microchipped, and we require your up-to-date contact information.
• Responsibility and Respect: As a dog owner, it’s your duty to clean up after your pet, keep them under control, and ensure they’re on a lead while on the estate.
• Noise Control: Dogs that bark persistently, causing disturbance to neighbours, may need to be reported, and further actions could be taken.
• Safety First: Allowing your dog to behave dangerously is a criminal offence. This includes any situation where your dog may chase, threaten, or physically harm people or other animals.

Breeds of Concern

Certain dog breeds are legally banned in the UK due to their potential danger to people and other animals. These include:

• Pit Bull Terrier
• Japanese Tosa
• Dogo Argentino
• Fila Brasileiro

Additionally, from 1st February 2024, owning an XL Bully will require a certificate of exemption.

Reporting Concerns

If you observe any instances of dog fouling, off-lead dogs, or any other concerns, please report them to the Estate Office. Your report will be handled with the utmost confidentiality.
