The Metropolitan Police have shared a warning about people visiting homes while pretending to be government officials.
The callers may claim that they need to check residents’ identification for a census or another government scheme. They may carry official-looking documents or equipment and ask to take photographs, fingerprints or other personal information.
There is no such government initiative. Do not provide these callers with any information or allow them into your home.
Protect yourself from bogus callers
- Do not let an unexpected caller into your home.
- Do not provide identification, photographs, fingerprints, banking details or other personal information.
- Ask the caller to leave and close the door.
- Never rely on a telephone number or website supplied by the caller. Verify their identity independently through the organisation’s official contact details.
- Please share this warning with relatives, friends and neighbours, particularly anyone who may be vulnerable.
If you feel threatened or believe a crime is taking place, call 999.
Suspected fraud can be reported to the Metropolitan Police on 101 or to Action Fraud online or by calling 0300 123 2040.
